Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has an immediate opening fora Senior Attorney.The primary function of this position is to protect the legal rights of the Cooperative and assist in maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. This position is responsible for negotiating and litigating assigned matters before the Maryland PSC, FERC, and other regulatory agencies, and is a primary liaison with the PSC commissioners and their staff. This position will identify legal and regulatory risks facing the Cooperative and develop strategies to mitigate such risks, including the implementation of effective risk management tools and processes. The Senior Attorney will also draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other transaction-related agreements, as well as review, monitor, and litigate and/or recommend settlements of legal claims. This position will also retain and coordinate efforts of outside legal counsel, as approved, and provide in-house guidance and counsel.
This position requires a candidate who works independently and with minimal supervision, can effectively combine legal requirements with practical business advice, has strong communication skills, is an effective team builder, and is able to influence without authority.
This position requires a four-year college degree and a Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. The candidate must be admitted to and a member in good standing of the Bar of Maryland.
The candidate must have a minimum of five years of increasing responsibility in the practice of law, with emphasis helpful on regulatory, contract, general corporate, and environmental matters. Previous progressive experience in an electric utility or similar business or an agency regulating utilities is highly desired.
The starting salary range for this position is $146,300 - $204,600. SMECO offers an excellent benefits program including a 401(k) 6% dollar for dollar match and an additional 3% non-elective company contribution.
