Salem, IL (7,282) – The City of Salem, Illinois is seeking an organized, analytical, and trustworthy legal professional that is gifted in municipal law, legal document preparation, and litigation to become its next contractual City Attorney.
Salem is the County Seat in Marion County, Illinois and is strategically located at the intersection of I-57 and U.S. Highway 50. Salem is one hour and thirty minutes east of St. Louis, Missouri, one hour and thirty minutes west of Vincennes, Indiana and two hours north of Paducah, Kentucky. Given its convenient location Salem serves as a regional draw for retail, health care, entertainment, and hospitality.
Salem is home to several diverse large employers that contribute to the economic stability of the city and to the quality of life in the community. North American Lighting, Howell Paving, Little Egypt Golf Cars, Fabick Caterpillar, and Union Pacific have a strong presence in the city. Salem Township Hospital serves as the largest healthcare provider in the city.
The City of Salem is a statutory City Manager Form of Government where the City Manager is appointed by the Mayor and City Council. The City Attorney is appointed by the City Manager. The current contractual City Attorney is retiring his contractual services to the city after serving in that capacity for the past 44 years. The City Attorney serves on a contractual basis for a set monthly contractual fee. The City Attorney is expected to attend both regularly scheduled monthly City Council Meetings that are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6 p.m.
Other major duties of the City Attorney include:
Legal advisor for the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and other city officials.
Preparation of all ordinances, resolutions, bonds, and contracts.
Oversee the approval of other documents involving the interest of the city.
Attend, prosecute, or defend, or cause to be prosecuted or defended all suits in which the city is a party, in any court.
Use all necessary and proper means for the enforcement and protection of the rights of the city.
Viable contractual candidates should meet the following minimum qualifications:
A Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited university.
Successful completion of the Illinois State Bar Examination.
A member in good standing with the Illinois State Bar Association.
A minimum of three to five years of experience with Illinois Municipal Law.
