Summary
Our law firm is seeking to hire a full-time remote immigration attorney who will be responsible for managing a limited caseload of his or her own cases and working as co-counsel on a larger shared caseload of removal defense cases, primarily in the Arizona immigration courts. Qualified applicants will have substantial experience in litigating removal defense cases in United States immigration courts. As a remote removal defense attorney, you will be responsible for working with clients and their families to identify and develop creative detention and removal defense strategies, working with clients and witnesses to prepare them for testimony, preparing briefs and other filings for individual calendar hearings, and collaborating closely with other lawyers in the firm who will attend most of the court hearings, and who will almost always try the case at the merits hearing stage.
What You'll Do
Manage a limited caseload of immigration cases appropriate for a remote attorney
Work as part of a two-attorney, one paralegal team on a larger caseload of removal defense cases, primarily in the Tucson, Phoenix, Eloy, and Florence Immigration Courts
Identify strategies to vigorously defend the firm’s clients against detention, findings of removability, and in support of applications for relief, including for asylum, withholding and CAT protection
Make remote appearances for master calendar and bond redetermination hearings, when remote appearance is appropriate and permissible
Conduct investigations and discovery to effectively support our clients’ claims with persuasive evidence
Prepare evidentiary submissions for filing with the immigration court
Work closely with clients, lay witnesses, and expert witnesses to prepare written declarations, and to prepare witnesses for in-court testimony
Legal research and writing; primarily drafting and filing motions, prehearing statements, and briefs with the immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Effectively communicate with other attorneys and experts in the field—locally and nationally—to leverage as much knowledge and advice as possible for the benefit of our clients
Analyze the immigration consequences of criminal convictions by providing “Padilla consults” to criminal defense attorneys
Perform consultations for potential clients who are interested in the law firm’s service
