O'Melveny has an immediate opening for an Attorney Professional Development Manager—Practice Group Talent Support. This role will work closely with assigned Practice Group Leaders, partners, and the Director of Attorney Professional Development to create an enhanced professional experience for the firm’s associates and counsel. The Attorney Professional Development Manager— Practice Group Talent Support will help ensure that practice groups are investing in mentoring, training, and feedback to promote the overall engagement and success of the firm’s associates and counsel.
This role reports to the Director of Attorney Professional Development.
The salary range in CA for this role is $145 - $175k and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work closely with the firm’s Department Heads, Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), and other partners to foster a culture in which associates and counsel feel engaged and prepared to deliver best-in-class client service. Provide strategic input, thought leadership, and guidance to PGLs and/or their designees to help them strategize and implement their talent leadership responsibilities.
Foster strong working relationships with partners, associates, and counsel in the relevant practice groups through regular communications and meetings.
Support the life cycle of an associate/counsel’s experience in their practice group(s), including:
Working with partners and associates to ensure new practice group members are effectively integrated
Implementing and executing formal mentoring programs based on discussion with and input from the PGL and associates/counsel
Meeting with associates, counsel, and partners to understand individual and group professional development needs; identify, create, and implement strategies to address individual and group needs
Partnering with the Senior Wellbeing and Benefits Specialist to ensure effective transitions to and from leaves of absence
Managing the approval process for associates/counsel seeking flexible work arrangements through the firm’s CustOMMize program and providing ongoing support for these associates/counsel
Coordinating the departure process, including conducting exit interviews
Collaborate with other Talent Development team members to take a lead role in the firm’s talent review process, including coordinating and participating in practice group meetings, drafting reviews, and ensuring effectively and timely delivery of feedback.Work closely with the firm’s Attorney Professional Development Manager to support the talent review and bonus processes.
Partner with the Senior Manager of Associate and Counsel Staffing and other firm resources to help monitor and review associate/counsel utilization, working closely with the PGL and/or their designee to guide effective staffing, work allocation, and professional development opportunities.
Understand and analyze associate/counsel hiring needs to draft requests for lateral hires and guide these requests through the management approval process.
Identify and understand potential performance concerns, working closely with the relevant partners and the Director of Attorney Professional Development to escalate concerns, provide guidance, and ensure timely feedback.
Assess potential training needs and collaborate with the Director of Attorney Professional Development, Senior Attorney Training and CLE Manager, partners, and other internal colleagues to develop and implement substantive legal and professional skills training programs.
Assist with curriculum design and implementation for the firm’s associate/counsel Leadership Academies.
Coordinate with our DE&I team to help ensure underrepresented associates/counsel are supported and trainings, communications, and processes incorporate best practices.
Collaborate with the Managing Director for Talent Development and other Talent Development team members to help implement firmwide projects and initiatives on an as-needed basis.
Work closely with the firm’s second Practice Group Development Manager to share best practices, coordinate across practice groups when appropriate, and supervise the Practice Group Development Coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
J.D. preferred.
5+ years' experience in a global law firm preferred, with involvement in training, review processes, mentoring, and other professional development programs.
Professional demeanor and effective oral communication skills.
Strong organizational skills with a focus on attention to detail, problem solving, and the ability to multitask.
Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills. Must be able to tailor written work product to the appropriate audience.
Demonstrated resourcefulness, creativity, and self-directed behavior.
Established project management skills. Demonstrated ability to make continued progress on long-term projects.
Ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels of the firm, including taking the initiative to meet and maintain positive relationships with attorneys and business professionals.
Ability to build trust and gain buy-in from firm leaders and other key stakeholders.
Judgment to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
Ability to identify potential legal issues and human resources concerns and message appropriately to firm management as necessary or required.
