Stonehill College seeks a Staff Attorney to join the Office of the General Counsel. Reporting to the Vice President and General Counsel, the Staff Attorney supports the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel in providing legal advice on behalf of Stonehill College to stakeholders on a wide variety of legal matters.
The successful candidate will possess knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings of local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations. They will have the ability to interpret employment and civil rights legislation and case law, negotiate contracts, and provide legal counsel.
The Staff Attorney will have the ability to provide a positive, creative, problem-solving approach to challenging legal issues and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. The Staff Attorney should have the ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment with individuals from diverse, multi-cultural backgrounds and provide value-added outcomes.
Key to the position is the ability to prepare legal documents, policies, and procedures; conduct research; conduct investigations, and prepare matters for trials or hearings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide information to students, faculty, and staff regarding their rights and responsibilities with regard to the college’s sexual misconduct and Title IX programs and accessibility resources, as well as all issues of discrimination and harassment, including information about the resources available on and off campus.
- Work to ensure an equitable and welcoming campus climate by leading, supporting, and communicating regularly with the college community about Title IX, ADA/Section 504, and other nondiscrimination programs and efforts.
- Coordinate and conduct training for students, faculty, and staff on issues of discrimination, harassment, privacy, and personal conduct. the college’s nondiscrimination policies, and grievance procedures.
- Partner with cross-divisional offices and departments to support students who have been impacted by discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct.
- Ensure that Stonehill’s policies and procedures comply with Title IX, VAWA, Campus SAVE Act, Title VII, Title VI, ADA, Section 504, FMLA, and other state and federal laws relating to discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct.
- Ensure that complaints, reports, and investigations are handled in accordance with college policies/procedures and apply prompt, fair, and impartial standards.
- Facilitate coordination and collaboration among college stakeholders including Student Affairs, Residence Life, Health Services, Counseling Services, the Office of Accessibility Resources, the Office of the General Counsel, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Campus Police.
- Enhance your own professional development through participation in conferences, webinars, and trainings.
- Maintain records in accordance with state and federal laws and college document retention policies.
- Assist Campus Police with Clery Act reporting and compliance.
- Has direct responsibility for student housing and meal plan accommodations and employee accommodations, as well as oversight of accessibility relating to online and electronic access to college resources.
Education & Experience
- Stonehill welcomes entry-level applicants and recent law school graduates. Some experience in higher education or a non-profit environment is desirable, but not required.
- A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school is required. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Massachusetts bar is required.
