The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is hiring a Tribal Attorney to join the in-house Legal Department on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation in southwest Colorado. The team of attorneys in the Legal Department provides legal representation, advice, and support to the Tribal government, including Tribal Council, Tribal officials, and Tribal departments. A strong command of Federal Indian law and understanding of tribal sovereignty in this position is essential, as is an ability to provide legal advice on a variety of topics in a fast-paced environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a law degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado and be in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court or eligible to waive into admission in Colorado within a year of hiring. Must be admitted or eligible for admission to practice before the Southern Ute Tribal Court. Must have a minimum of 3 years full-time experience practicing law, including significant Indian law experience. Must have current computer experience in software programs in the Windows environment. Must be in good standing in the jurisdictions in which the attorney is admitted to practice law. Must have an understanding of legal reference resources, research techniques, practices and procedures used to prepare and present an effective case in court or administrative proceedings. Must be able to provide accurate legal advice on a wide variety of topics in a fast-paced environment. Must have valid driver’s license and be insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy. Must pass a thorough background check including criminal history, fingerprint check, pre-employment drug test, and professional references demonstrating a record of reliability, professionalism, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience working for a Tribe. Previous experience drafting codes and policies.
