The Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance (HJA) seeks a contract attorney for its newest medical-legal partnership with the MedStar Washington Hospital Center Community Violence Intervention Program (MWHC-CVIP). The HJA is a medical-legal partnership (MLP) between Georgetown Law Center and Georgetown University Medical Center that includes a range of inter-professional education, service, and research initiatives designed to address health and justice disparities faced by vulnerable communities in DC.
MWHC-CVIP is a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP). HVIPs approach survivors of violence during the critical period of hospitalization, identify risk factors for future reinjury, and use culturally sensitive case management to reduce future violent reinjury.
Through a grant from the DC Office of Victims Services and Justice Grants, MWHC-CVIP and HJA are piloting a medical-legal partnership, the CVIP Legal Assistance & Wellbeing Project (CVIP-LAW) to address the unmet civil legal needs of victims of violent injury.
The contract attorney will report to the current MLP Director of HJA's Cancer LAW Project, and will join an interdisciplinary team of law and medical faculty, staff, students and community partners. The attorney's responsibilities will include:
● Creating a legal screening and referral system ● Training MWHC-CVIP providers and staff to screen and refer patients to the HJA legal team ● Providing direct civil legal services to CVIP participants (specific areas of legal need are still being determined through a needs assessment, but many MLPs provide services in the areas of housing, public benefits, family law and employment) ● Building referral relationships with other legal services providers ● Engaging in community outreach and education ● Identifying potential roles for law and medical students to engage in CVIP-LAW ● Contributing to the data collection and research for the MLP
Qualifications: ● JD from an accredited law school ● 3-5 years of post-J.D. legal experience providing civil legal services to low-income clients, and willingness to develop additional legal expertise as needed ● Membership or ability to waive into the District of Columbia Bar ● The willingness and ability to work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare providers to address patients' health-harming legal needs and to leverage medical expertise to advance legal advocacy at the individual and community level ● A demonstrated commitment to social justice and service to vulnerable clients ● Interest in contributing to the data and other research focused on measuring the impact of medical-legal partnership on health and legal outcomes
Preferred Qualifications: ● Prior MLP experience and/or experience building new legal aid programs or expanding existing ones ● Experience training healthcare providers on areas of law impacting their patients ● Expertise in one or more of the following areas of law is preferred but not required: housing, family law, public benefits, and employment ● Familiarity with the intersection of criminal and civil legal needs ● Experience with Legal Server or other legal case management systems
Contract Term: The position is a full-time contract position from May 15, 2022-September 30, 2022. The selected candidate will be hired via Georgetown University's contingent employment services vendor, NextSource. Candidates are eligible for benefits through NextSource after 60 days of employment. There is the potential for this position to continue after September 30, and for the position to convert to a Georgetown University staff position with benefits, depending on continued funding.
Compensation: The contract attorney will be paid a competitive hourly rate commensurate with their experience and skill level.
Work Mode: The contract attorney will provide some legal services on-site at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and will have the flexibility to telework and/or work out of HJA's offices at 500 1st St. NW.
