Director, New Americans Campaign – San Francisco
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is seeking a full-time Director for the New Americans Campaign (NAC) based in San Francisco. This is an exempt position that reports to the Executive Director.
The ILRC is a national nonprofit legal support center headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Washington, D.C.; Austin, TX; Houston, TX; San Antonio, TX; and the San Joaquin Valley of California. The mission of the ILRC is to work with, educate, and enhance the capacity of immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector, in order to build a democratic society that values diversity, dignity, and the rights of all people. Founded in 1979, the ILRC is regarded as one of the foremost experts on engaging immigrants and developing their leaderships, providing expertise on complex issues of immigration law, procedure and policy, and engaging in advocacy and educational initiatives on policies that affect immigrants. We are a team-based organization that makes decisions in a collaborative fashion that allows for significant staff input.
As part of its mission, ILRC serves as the lead agency for the New Americans Campaign (NAC), a non-partisan national campaign aimed at increasing the number of new Americans by ensuring access to the naturalization process and trusted legal assistance. The goals of the NAC project are threefold: 1) to encourage eligible lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to become U.S. citizens and assist them with the process; 2) to increase the long-term sustainability of charitable and community-based direct legal service providers that support the naturalization process by increasing their capacity to provide services; and 3) to increase access to naturalization through improvements to the naturalization process.
Position Summary: Reporting directly to the ILRC Executive Director, the New Americans Campaign Director (“NAC Director”) will lead, develop, and sustain the NAC. The NAC Director will provide strategic, fiscal, programmatic, and day-to-day leadership and oversight to the NAC, in both an internal and external capacity, and in collaboration with external partners and ILRC internal teams. The NAC Director will lead a small, skilled NAC team within ILRC and work with external consultants as needed. Given the role and responsibilities expected from the NAC Director, the ILRC seeks a seasoned professional with significant experience developing, managing, growing, and sustaining programs or projects; experience leading collaborative initiatives; experience managing nonprofit entities and staff; substantial foundation fundraising experience; and knowledge of/experience working in the U.S. immigration system. The ideal candidate will bring a demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and anti-racism.
Job Responsibilities: The job responsibilities of the NAC Director include the following:
- Lead the development and implementation of the short, medium, and long-term strategy for the NAC and inspire a shared vision among NAC collaboration partners and funders;
- Lead the development and approval of the NAC’s annual multi-million-dollar budget, manage the NAC’s Finance Consultant, and ensure all aspects of the program operate within budget requirements;
- Take the lead role to ensure that adequate funding is available to effectively carry out the goals and priorities of the project in the short and medium term. This role requires a substantial amount of fundraising, grant writing, grant reporting, and funder cultivation, primarily from national and local foundations;
- Manage sub-granting of funding to NAC national partners; ensure timely execution of MOUs at the start of the NAC’s fiscal year as well as timely reporting; engage national partners in budget development; and monitor national partner performance;
- Lead the NAC national partner Executive Committee and Operations Committee; work collaboratively with national partners to problem solve and determine appropriate, consensus-based solutions; maintain positive, respectful, and genuinely collaborative relationships with NAC partners;
- Serve as the ILRC’s liaison with the Naturalization Working Group, a naturalization policy initiative;
- Lead bi-annual, multi-day convenings of NAC funders, national partners, site leaders;
- Coordinate and supervise the day-to-day operations of the project, and establish systems and standards to carry out operations to fulfill goals and priorities;
- Partner with the Associate Director of the NAC in working with the NAC Funders Committee and NAC Funder Chair on funder-facing and funder-driven projects of the NAC and on grant proposals and grant reports; in planning and implementing the NAC communications strategy; and in sub-granting NAC funds;
- Supervise the Innovation & Learning Manager in using metrics and data to guide the work of NAC partners toward completion of project goals, encourage innovative practice, promote the sharing of ideas and approaches, and document success; managing and fostering a learning network; communicating data and findings internally to NAC partners and funders and externally with the field; and implementing the NAC annual conference;
- Inspire a good atmosphere among the collaboration partners;
- Attend and participate in NAC partner convenings, conferences, virtual and in-person meetings, and teleconferences; represent the NAC in conferences and meetings organized by NAC funders and allies; represent the NAC in internal ILRC meetings;
- Represent the NAC to the media;
- Gather input from field partners, funders, and community in order to make informed decisions; and
- Overnight, periodic national travel required.
Qualifications: The successful applicant should have: - First-rate leadership and visionary skills and extensive experience leading a large and complex project involving numerous partners;
- Experience working with the funding community including experience fundraising through developed relationships and grant writing and reporting;
- Significant budget management experience;
- Strong meeting facilitation skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills, collaboration skills, and the ability to inspire, persuade, and build consensus;
- Outstanding writing skills;
- A willingness to exchange ideas and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with colleagues, partner organizations, and the immigrant community as to approaches for carrying out the goals and priorities;
- A willingness to carry out the decision-making for the collaboration, while also consulting with some or all staff members on key decisions;
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to understand and communicate well with partners, the immigrant community, funders and the media;
- Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and complete work efficiently with sufficient lead time; and
- Respect for all co-workers and partner collaborators.
