Normal Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:45 pm
Job Summary: The Staff Attorney will conduct and/or assist with all phases of legal advocacy for individuals and classes of persons including research, preparation of documents, interviewing and counseling, negotiations and appearing before administrative tribunals and courts at the trial and appellate level. The incumbent will make presentations to consumers and the public concerning legal rights and remedies. The incumbent will assist in the supervision of students from other disciplines.
Additional Department Summary: ADAP is the statewide protection and advocacy system for the state of Alabama. ADAP works to achieve fairness and justice for Alabamians with disabilities. We provide legally-based advocacy services; investigate allegations of abuse and neglect against persons with disabilities; participate in legislative and regulatory advocacy work; and conduct education and outreach about disability rights. The Staff Attorney Law Fellow conducts and/or assists with all phases of legal advocacy for individuals and classes of persons with disabilities, including research, preparation of documents, interviewing and counseling, negotiations and appearing before administrative tribunals and courts at the trial and appellate level. The Staff Attorney Law Fellow makes presentations to consumers and the public concerning legal rights and remedies. Extensive in-state travel is required. Continuation in this position is contingent upon the availability of funding, but will not exceed two years.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Juris Doctor and licensed to practice law in Alabama OR must become a member of the Alabama Bar within one year of the date of hire. Admitted or eligible for admission to practice before all federal courts whose jurisdictions encompass Alabama. In-state travel required. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to manage a caseload, including litigation, at all levels of state and federal courts Experience working with and sensitivity to individuals with disabilities. Ability to work independently while being supervised and supported by managers and other team members. Effective oral and written communication skills. Exceptional interpersonal relationship skills. Strong computer / technology literacy. High commitment to service excellence.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with or functional knowledge regarding: Laws, regulations and programs affecting people with disabilities, including ADA, IDEA, Section 504, Medicaid, and related Election law; state systems serving persons with disabilities including the Alabama Dept. of Mental Health, Alabama Dept. of Human Resources, Alabama Dept. of Corrections, Alabama Youth Services, Alabama State Dept. of Education; the disability rights movement.
