Our client is a closely held real estate investment and specialty finance company formed in 2011, primarily focused on retail and multi-family real estate. Our client provides equity financing to merchant developers for the development and subsequent sale of single-tenant and convenience-oriented shopping centers. To a lesser extent, the firm has made equity investments in multi-family properties, again with a relatively short-term bias. The firm accesses investment opportunities through establishing long-lasting joint ventures with proven developers and serving as their capital partner.
Our client is evolving from a family investment office to an institutional investor and from a narrowly focused real estate specialty finance company to a real estate investment company with a broader and more opportunistic mandate. The evolution is driven by an expansion of the firm’s investment strategy, to include long-term ownership opportunities as well as alternative development financing programs, and by an expansion of the firm’s capital base.
In furtherance of the above mission, our client is seeking to hire a Real Estate Attorney who will report to the firm’s Managing Director as well as the current General Counsel.
From Day 1, the ideal candidate must be able to:
Independently handle sophisticated commercial, retail/shopping centers and multifamily/residential condo acquisition, financing and joint venture transactions.
Draft and negotiate documentation related to loan, acquisitions, dispositions, development and construction transactions.
Manage, retain, coordinate and evaluate relationships with outside legal counsel.
Coordinate and advise on the structuring of complex private equity investments/transactions, partnerships and joint ventures.
5-7+ years of experience in the practice of transactional commercial real estate
In-house real estate legal department or law firm experience (or a combination) is anticipated
A demonstrable proficiency in handling sophisticated commercial retail leasing transactions, structuring, real estate acquisitions and financing, and property sales
In addition to the core real estate practice proficiencies stated above, experience handling construction contracts, development, bankruptcy and/or litigation matters will be helpful
Flexibility and a willingness to take on projects with new challenges as well as an ability to work both independently and as a team are a must.
