In the field of chemistry, to perform core patent activities independently and more complex patent and related activities with levels of independence linked to experience. To interact, advise and, with greater experience, strategically partner within the business, including with leaders within the business, with respect to patent and related activities. To utilize high level expertise on specific topics within own Division. To contribute to the development of operational and strategic objectives within own Division according to levels of experience.
Main Accountabilities Including but not limited to, according to levels of experience:
Undertakes/leads core and complex patent activities in role; e.g. patent drafting and prosecution, patentability and freedom to operate analysis, IP due diligences, adversarial proceedings, and contract IP terms.
Manages a patent portfolio relating to a key product, multiple products or other strategic assets.
Applies strong/deep expertise in national patent law and practice and working/superior working knowledge of foreign patent law and practice.
Understands other forms of protection relating to exclusivity, and applies as required.
Provides specialist knowledge on specific patent matters to own organization.
Understands the business at the level of his/her own Division and, with greater experience, at the level of the Novartis group as part of the healthcare industry, and the role of IP in the business at that level.
Builds relationships and counsels senior colleagues and key Business Partners on complex and high value/impact IP-related matters and represents Patents on respective boards/meetings.
Contributes to/Champions quality and operational excellence in Division.
Contributes to management of Division budget through applying cost containment strategies.
Contributes to/Leads implementation and applies Division patent policies and guidelines.
Continuously develops personal and professional skills and contributes to IP education of colleagues and clients.
May mentor or manage other members of the Division; e.g. other patent practitioners, paralegals or searchers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Qualifications and Experiences
Scientific Degree BA, BSc, MS, PhD in Chemistry or related subject and (a) USPTO registration for Patent Agent roles, and (b) JD and USPTO registration for Patent Attorney roles
Senior Patent Attorney:
1+ years exposure of; Project leadership; Law/Patent firm interaction, government or health agency (indirect) interaction
Greater than 2 years’ experience of: Cross-functional working; Drug discovery and Development functions
Extensive/specialized experience of: Main relevant substantive experience
Patent Attorney II/Senior Patent Agent:
1+ years exposure of: Drug discovery and Development functions
Greater than 2 years’ experience of: Main relevant substantive experience
Desired Experiences Senior Patent Attorney:
1+ years exposure of: Senior management interaction; Other relevant substantive experience; Business development and licensing (BD&L) (indirect); Commercial functions; Cross-functional working
Greater than 2 years’ experience of: Project leadership; Cross-cultural interaction; Global/Regional working; Matrix organization working
Extensive/specialized experience of: Law/Patent firm interaction, government or health agency (indirect) interaction; Healthcare industry/environment; Drug discovery and Development functions
Patent Attorney II/Senior Patent Agent:
