JUDGE’S LAW CLERK ANNUAL SALARY: $61,232 OR JUDGE’S STAFF ATTORNEY ANNUAL SALARY: $71,065

Reports to: Judge Frye
Purpose of Position: This position assists the Judge in the research, drafting, and decision-making process; conducting research and advising the Judge on legal issues that may arise in a hearing or trial; assisting attorneys with procedural questions/issues; and ensuring case management of pending actions.
Essential Job Functions: • Researches statutory law, case law, and procedure germane to civil and criminal matters pending before the court; uses online and hard copy research sources; drafts decisions and/or entries; proofreads and edits Judge’s decisions/entries • Conducts some conferences related to motion practice, discovery, etc.; assists counsel to resolve continuances, discovery issues, case management issues, etc. • Receives and responds to telephone or live questions regarding civil cases • Coordinates with Judge, Magistrate, other staff, attorneys, and litigants; answers inquiries • Coordinates hearing dates for special matters and general management of civil docket • Manages the current-motion list • Edits jury instructions in civil and criminal cases • Attends professional events, on occasion, for the Judge • Performs other related duties as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions: • Ability to coordinate, manage, and/or correlate data, including exercising judgment in determining time, place and/or sequence of operations. • Ability to function in a managerial capacity and make decisions on procedural and technical levels. • Ability to use computer assisted court filing system, LEXIS legal research and other materials used in performing essential functions. • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, and ratios; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures. • Ability to apply principles of logical or synthesis functions; and to analyze major problems that require complex planning for interrelated activities. • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving frequent change. • Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (10 pounds). Tasks often involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. • Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Minimum Qualifications- Law Clerk • Juris Doctor. • Within one year of employment, must obtain a license to practice law in the state of Ohio.
Minimum Qualifications- Staff Attorney • Juris Doctor. • One (1) year law experience, during or after law school. • Must possess and maintain a license to practice law in the State of Ohio.
