The temporary part-time Staff Attorney at Student Legal Services is responsible for providing assistance to students with legal problems and/or questions by providing legal counsel, advice, representation, referral, negotiation and mediation in a wide range of legal matters. The mission of the department of Student Legal Services is to facilitate legal problem solving responsive to student needs and to provide legal services directed toward resolving impediments to student learning, thereby encouraging student retention and success. The Staff Attorney will report to the Director and works directly with other office staff. The Staff Attorney will be fully integrated into SLS. SLS services are funded through student fees and are otherwise free to PSU students. No client billing required.
This is a temporary part-time, 24 hours per week position. The pay range is $35 to $40 per hour, dependent on experience. Professional Liability Insurance provided by SLS, however, no health, dental or other benefits provided. The anticipated start date is April 2, 2018 and the anticipated end date is December 32, 2018.
Duties and Responsibilities will include:
Interview student clients, identify and research legal issues, provide legal advice and information, and provide representation of students on legal matters when appropriate. Legal matters may include but not limited to criminal, family law, landlord tenant, consumer/debtor creditor, personal injury, insurance disputes, traffic, and employment law.
Assist, support and communicate with Director, other Staff Attorneys and support staff in developing referral resources and other programs to assist students in managing and resolving disputes and other legal issues.
At direction of Director and Assistant Director, determine level of representation of each student client.
Promote and model teamwork and establishment of a collaborative, service-oriented multicultural environment in the Student Legal Services department.
Work cooperatively with other PSU staff to market Student Legal Services on campus towards the advancement of overall Student Affairs and University-wide goals.
Assist and provide innovation towards the creation of a learning environment and learning outcomes for student clients, interns, law clerks and student staff.
Identify and support alternative dispute resolution processes for resolution of legal issues.
Current Oregon State Bar membership in good standing and ability to maintain.
At least 4 years' experience with at least 1 year of that experience to include criminal law or a substantially related field. Sufficient competence in criminal defense to provide consultations and potentially representation to students with violations or misdemeanors (not necessarily felonies).
Demonstrated ability to independently manage a caseload with minimal supervision.
Willing to advise and represent students in family law matters.
Experience providing legal advice and representation to a diverse constituency.
Excellent oral, written, legal research and conflict resolution skills.
Good judgment, problem-solving and resolution skills.
Ability to adhere to the Oregon Rules of Professional Conduct and highest standards of professionalism.
Ability to work effectively in a team.
Successfully complete a background check.
Experience practicing in one or more of SLS's current practice areas: family law, landlord tenant, consumer/debtor creditor, personal injury, insurance disputes, and employment law.
Good contacts within local legal community and familiarity with other resources and agencies available within community to assist students.
Expressed and articulated interest in working in higher education.
Expressed and articulated understanding of our office's mission and goals.
