Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) has strengthened lives, assisted families and supported communities – one person at a time for over 40 years. Legal representation focuses on those negatively impacted by the criminal justice system through criminal defense work, criminal records work and civil cases that arise from criminal justice system involvement.
Overview of Position
The Housing Program provides legal representation to clients facing the loss or denial of subsidized housing based on criminal activity allegations to tenants in eviction matters, voucher participants in administrative hearings and writ of certiorari petitions, and applicants to a variety of subsidized housing programs. The primary responsibilities of this role are to implement CGLA’s priorities in the housing practice through an interdisciplinary approach and to train and supervise fellows, interns, and volunteers to ensure quality legal services and representation.
Provide direct legal services to CGLA clients for housing matters, including representation in court and administrative proceedings, maintaining a manageable caseload proportionate to other responsibilities.
Work with the Client Support Services Program (Social Work Team) to ensure that clients are served in meaningful ways beyond the delivery of legal services.
Supervise volunteers and interns handling housing matters.
Cultivate and manage relationships with partner agencies and organizations that refer clients to CGLA as assigned.
Conduct community outreach to partners and community members.
Facilitate housing law trainings as assigned throughout the year for prospective volunteers, including lawyers, law firms, and law students.
Collaborate with fellow attorneys and others as needed to prepare and distribute educational materials for housing matters.
Maintain up-to-date client information in CGLA’s case management system to ensure accurate data collection and statistical tracking.
Keep abreast of changes in the law and participate in trainings to further legal knowledge and skills.
Attend weekly client intake meetings, as well as regular staff and administrative meetings.
Design legal manuals and other materials for clients, attorneys, courts and other personnel as assigned.
Works with the CGLA leadership team to ensure all program goals are met each fiscal year.
Required Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
A demonstrated commitment to social justice and criminal justice reform.
Licensed to practice in Illinois.
A minimum of one year of experience in civil litigation, preferably in housing law;
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Be self-driven, highly energetic and innovative;
The ability to work collaboratively with staff, interns and volunteers.
The ability to supervise interns and volunteers.
The ability to manage multiple projects and a variety of tasks and meet all deadlines while being energized by the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, team-centered environment.
