East Carolina University, with an enrollment of 29,000 students, is the only constituent institution in the University of North Carolina system with a School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and College of Engineering and Technology. The Office of University Counsel provides comprehensive legal advice and counsel regarding legal matters to the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, the principal administrators of the University and, through them, to faculty, staff, and students of East Carolina University.
The Office of University Counsel is seeking a dynamic attorney to support expansion of the research and health sciences enterprise within ECU. Under the leadership of Chancellor Cecil Staton, ECU is undertaking a bold initiative to increase its research productivity and expand its licensing and economic development activities as it seeks to become America’s next great national university. The Assistant/Associate University attorney will coordinate with the Senior Associate University Attorney and the Associate University Attorney for Health Sciences in providing legal support to the Divisions of Research, Economic Development, and Engagement (REDE) and Health Sciences (HSD), respectively, on research issues and healthcare transactional matters, including support of the Brody School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine.
The position reports to the University Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs, and will functionally coordinate with the Senior Associate University Attorney and Associate University Attorney for Health Sciences. The position will provide professional legal advice and counsel primarily in connection with the activities of REDE and HSD, including, but not limited to:
1.the review and negotiation of clinical trial agreements, sponsored research and related agreements, IP licensing agreements, and agreements relating to clinical operations; 2.review and negotiation of contracts for the medical faculty practice plan for the delivery of professional medical services and other healthcare activities; 3.advising on conflicts of interest, export controls, research integrity, human subjects, animal research, grants and contracts, technology transfer, and ECU and UNC research policies; 4.advising on patent, copyright and trademark law, and IP litigation 5.advising the administration and staff with regard to ECU Centers and Institutes and non-profit entities; 6.provide and/or coordinate legal advice for leases, facility use agreements, and other basic real estate matters as needed; and 7.other matters as assigned by the University Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs
Specific requirements for this position include the following:
1.Ability to provide expert, comprehensive legal advice directly to administrators in REDE and HSD and, as needed, other units within the University without the need for close supervision. 2.Ability to conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions and prepare legal documents including, but not limited to, the ability to draft complex and innovative contracts in the health care setting. 3.Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with the University’s varied internal and external constituencies contacted in the course of performing assigned duties. 4.Ability to meet deadlines, to manage and revise priorities consistent with the highest needs of the institution, and to proactively follow- through to ensure completion of projects in a timely manner without close supervision. 5.Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and practices, as well as analytical skills, including the ability to identify and resolve legal issues. 6.Ability to represent the University professionally and tactfully. 7.Ability to work collaboratively in a small legal office, including collaborative skills and leadership style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, and flexibility. 8.Ability to maintain confidentiality. 9.Ability to use common word processing computer applications.
Salary and title are commensurate with experience. May fill as Assistant University Attorney (classification and working title) based on qualifications and experience of selected candidate.
