The City of South Padre Island is seeking a City Attorney who will serve as in-house counsel, providing legal counsel to City officials, officers, and employees in all matters pertaining to the business of the City. The City Attorney duties require extensive independent judgement. The City Attorney reports to the City Manager and works closely with the City’s Leadership Team which includes the Assistant City Manager, Finance Director, Information Technology Director, Administrative Services Director, Development Director, Fire Chief, Police Chief, Shoreline Director, City Secretary, Management Assistant, Building Official, Parks and Recreation Manager, CVB Director and the Public Information Officer. The City Attorney must be a personable, accountable, and collaborative professional that is team oriented with the goal of protecting the City of South Padre Island from any future liabilities. The desired candidate will have the ability and experience in effectively working with people; exercising initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy in a wide variety of public contact situations while exercising ideas clearly and concisely. The ideal candidate has significant experience in working for or with municipalities in Texas. Coastal experience is strongly preferred. The candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of municipal law, municipal finance, personnel law, land use and regulation, and the ability to provide sound legal advice in these areas.
Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in the State of Texas is required. In addition, candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years work experience as a municipal attorney or closely related position; equivalency to be determined by the City of South Padre Island.Experience with Texas municipalities, specifically coastal municipalities is preferred.
